The Importance of SKIN CARE

The skin is the largest and most important organ in the human body. Think about this, the skin is waterproof and its main purpose is to protect all of your internal body systems. The skin suffers lots of trauma throughout the years including: sun, wind, dryness, dehydration, acne, bacteria, and infections. Taking care of your skin must be a priority.

Do you know? about 40,000 skin cells fall off every hour, and over a 24-hour period, your skin sheds almost a million skin cells.

5 things you can do to keep your skin healthy

  1. Hydration: Drink plenty of water, at least one-half ounce of water per pound. Example, if your weight is 160 pounds, you should drink at least 80 ounces of water a per day.

  2. Moisturizer: Moisturizing your face and skin everyday can reduce the chance of developing extreme dryness or irritation.

  3. Nutrition: Good nutrition plays an important role on maintaining healthy skin. Add healthy foods to your diet, like salmon which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, healthy greens like spinach, kale, collard greens, broccoli, and brussels sprouts. These greens are rich in vitamin A and vitamin E which can help protect your skin from acne, dehydration and dark spots.

  4. Shower: 5-10-minutes of hot shower or bath time per day should be all you need. Extending your shower time can wash away your natural skin oils. The hotter the water the more the skin will dry out.

  5. Sunscreen Protection: Protecting your skin from sun exposure should be a priority. Regular use of SPF sunscreen can reduce your risk of developing skin cancers and can also help prevent premature skin aging, including wrinkles, sagging and age spots.

5 things you should avoid

  1. Smoking: Nicotine, other chemicals in cigarettes can contribute to wrinkles and premature aging of the skin: Smoking causes blood vessels to narrow, reducing oxygen flow and nutrients to skin cells.

  2. Alcohol: Too much alcohol intake can dehydrate your skin reducing moisture and elasticity and speeding up aging signs and wrinkles. It is important to drink plenty of water after a heavy drinking session to restore your hydration levels.

  3. Processed foods: Limit the intake of processed and fatty foods. Processed foods like chips, crackers, and cookies and starches like white bread, pasta, and potatoes can degrade the level of collagen and elastin in your skin.

  4. Sun exposure: Over time sun exposure can take a toll on your skin. Wrinkles, dry skin, and dark spots are some damage cause by sun exposure. But in a more severe situation your skin can develop skin cancer
