Salt intake | Salty Snacks

Like most of the cravings, salty cravings are related to the environment and to our lifestyle. In many cases cravings salty foods is related to stress, anxiety and food restrictions.

When you are under a lot of stress, overwhelmed or anxious about something, it can impact your appetite levels. It makes you crave comfort foods because of the imbalance of your hormone levels under attack.

We tend to be more vulnerable to cravings when the body is under food restriction, meaning under a diet plan. Depriving tasty food can eventually create stress, causing anxiety, and lead you to overeat unhealthy foods when you get a chance. However, our body needs salt to function.

The daily consumption of salt should be no more than 2,300 milligrams per day (1 teaspoon)

If you don’t consume the recommended daily salt intake, in severe cases, low sodium levels in the body can lead to muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting and dizziness.

From the meals we order at restaurants to the pantry staples and packaged foods we buy in the grocery store, there's a lot of salt in our diet. But salt doesn't just affect your taste buds. Sodium found in salt is an important electrolyte needed for muscle contractions, nerve impulses and balancing hydration in the body.
