Cravings for sweets
Why Do We Love Sweets So Much?
Our brain is designed to respond with feelings of pleasure when we taste something sweet, especially when the body is lacking certain nutrients, particularly minerals. Not eating regularly or not drinking enough water can also increase cravings for sweets. When energy levels feel low, it may be a sign that the body needs fuel or better nourishment.
Nutrient deficiencies can also play a role in sweet cravings. A lack of certain minerals such as zinc, chromium, iron, calcium, and magnesium may increase the desire for sugary foods. Maintaining good eating habits and getting the recommended nutrients is important for proper body function. Without this balance, cravings for sweets can become more frequent.
When we go long periods without eating nutritious foods, the body may feel low on energy, leading us to reach for quick sources of fuel, such as sweets.
Why do we crave sugar and salt in particular?
First, we have to admit—they are very appealing in taste and presentation.
It is also important to listen to your body, as cravings can sometimes signal an imbalance.
Stress: High stress levels can increase cravings for sugary, salty, and fatty foods because stress hormones signal the body to seek quick energy.
Low energy: When the body is tired or low on fuel, it naturally seeks quick sources of energy.
Lack of sleep: Even one night of poor sleep can affect hunger and appetite hormones, increasing cravings.
Dehydration: Dehydration is often mistaken for hunger and can trigger cravings.
